The Helping Others Achieve After-School Achievement Program will operate weekly every Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. providing a safe, structured, and academically focused environment for children ages 6–14 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Designed to support youth before they enter high school, the program integrates academic support with intentional life-skills development, college and career preparation, and early workforce exposure to ensure participants are prepared for future success. The program will offer transportation to participants who qualify for the service.
Academic support is a core component of the program and includes daily homework assistance, individual and small-group tutoring, literacy and reading development, and reinforcement in math and science. These services are complemented by enrichment activities that focus on building practical skills essential for adolescence and beyond. Youth will participate in social-emotional learning, goal setting, communication skills, time management, teamwork, and leadership development—skills that directly support success in middle school, high school, and postsecondary pathways.
The program places a strong emphasis on high school and college readiness by introducing young teens to academic expectations, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and early exposure to college and career pathways. Participants will engage in job-readiness activities, including professionalism, “dressing for success,” workplace behavior, and basic financial literacy. Through the program’s entrepreneurship component, older youth will have opportunities to explore business concepts, develop creative ideas, and gain hands-on experience through youth-led initiatives such as an arts-based entrepreneurship program, including T-shirt design and sales. Teens interested in caregiving careers will also have the opportunity to build foundational workforce skills through babysitting and childcare training, supporting early certification pathways and practical employment experience.
Creative expression and innovation are further supported through art education and creative arts programming, which reinforce entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and self-confidence. Additional enrichment includes gardening and introductory agriculture, STEM exposure, movement and fitness activities, and team-building exercises that encourage collaboration and healthy lifestyles.
